Best Practices-III: “LGBT Age” from Scotland - May 17 Association

The LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme has aimed to share with its readers every month between February and May 2024, 4 of some best practices around the world for LGBTI+ elders that have not been included before in 3 different publication that it has prepared within the scope of its different studies in different years since its establishment and it published its first  two news that regard last month.

 

The third best practice to be mentioned herein as a part of such advocacy activities*, is the “LGBT Age” from Scotland organized under “LGBT Health and Wellbeing”, which is Scotland’s health and wellbeing charity for LGBTI+ persons; working to improve the physical, social, and mental health and wellbeing of LGBTI+ community in Scotland through responsive support services.

 

With the pledge of free and confidential support for 50+ LGBTI+ persons in Scotland, LGBT Age works with 50+ LGBTI+ community in Glasgow to shape support services and resources, including social events, community activism, and volunteering opportunities. As individual support, they offer a tele friending service for elder LGBTI+ persons across Scotland who are isolated. In addition, for emotional support or information they offer LGBT Helpline Scotland.

 

For social support and community activism, they host regular social meetups in Edinburgh, Glasgow and online, including the series of coffee meetups, a monthly social outing in Glasgow, and a film club in Edinburgh. They have a Virtual Hug newsletter to get monthly updates about such events. They also host the Age Action Group which is a group of elder LGBT+ persons who regularly meet to explore the issues affecting their community.

 

In addition to that, they have lots of resources to support health and social care professionals reflect on their practice and advance the inclusion of elder LGBT+ persons in their service.

 

 

* These advocacy studies of LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme planned between February and May 2024 will be hold within the scope of the "Advancing the rights of LGBTI+ in Turkey" project supported by ILGA Europe.
