The meeting provided the observations of the activism histories of two different age groups on these subjects.
This Intergenerational Communication Meeting, which was the second of such meetings as a part of advocacy activities* of the LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme of May 17 Association, was held on 17 April 2024 between 19:00-20:10.
This meeting, which 16 persons applied for registration beforehand and 14 persons of them attended to, gathered two different activists in their 20s (Ahmet) and 40s (Seçin), highlighted a contrast between where we were 20 years ago and where we are now in terms of anti-homophobia meetings-May 17 marches held in the past in Ankara and pride week events/pride marches in Istanbul through the questions asked. The meeting provided the observations of the activism histories of two different age groups on these subjects.
Seçin firstly mentioned the Anti-Homophobia meetings, which were initiated in 2006 by Kaos GL as a small scale study and how these went bigger until these were held in 50 cities with countless spokespersons and events including the ones in the university campuses every year from May 1 to May 17. Seçin also mentioned the May 17 marches in Ankara held in the end of Anti-Homophobia meetings.
Ahmet explained the Istanbul Pride Week events, pride marches and trans pride marches. The importance of strategy-change for the LGBTI+ movement was discussed against the increased oppression, starting from the pride march in 2015, which was one of the first pride marches with the most intense violence faced, the Governorship bans, and the "Lets Scatter" pride march in 2017.
After the Q&A session, the event was over.
