OLOC as an International Community of Lesbian Elders was established in 1989.
The LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme has aimed to share with its readers every month between February and May 2024, 4 of some best practices around the world for LGBTI+ elders that have not been included before in 3 different publication that it has prepared within the scope of its different studies in different years since its establishment and it published its first three news that regard last month.
The fourth and last best practice to be mentioned herein as a part of such advocacy activities*, is the “OLOC”- Old Lesbians Organizing for Change from USA.
OLOC as an International Community of Lesbian Elders was established in 1989, conceived as a way to utilize the unique experiences of lesbians at least 60 years of age, to challenge ageism within their own community, within the larger women’s community and within society at large. OLOC works to enlighten and motivate affiliates and supporters about ageism and its effects on everyone. They dedicated to preserving and enhancing the Lesbian Voice as well as increasing Lesbian visibility, therefore they organize national and international gatherings while shooting memorial slide show videos each year. They hold Martin-Lyon Old Lesbian Pride Award ceremony each year to honor pioneer elder lesbians.
Since 2006, they publish “The Reporter” which is a quarterly print/PDF newsletter for its 55+ affiliates and OLOC supporters of any age. It is sent by mail or emailed four times in a year.
* These advocacy studies of LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme planned between February and May 2024 will be hold within the scope of the "Advancing the rights of LGBTI+ in Turkey" project supported by ILGA Europe.
